2008 Italian exports by region

In 2008 the value of Italian exports registered a slight increase (+ 0.3 percent) compared to the previous year. Flows toward the non-EU countries grew (+ 6.5 percent), while those toward the EU member states registered a decline of 3.7 percent.
The dynamic of exports registered strongly different trends from a geographical standpoint. Among the regions that contributed most to export volume in 2008, the strongest increases year-on-year were generated by:
  •  Sardinia (+ 22.4 percent)
  •  Liguria (+ 9.4 percent)
  •  Latium (+ 7.7 percent)
  •  Friuli-Venezia Giulia (+ 5.9 percent)
  •  Abruzzo (+ 4.9 percent).
The sharpest declines, on the other hand, were registered by the Marches (- 14.5 percent), Tuscany (- 4.9 percent), Veneto (- 4.6 percent) and Campania (- 1.8 percent).

Sectors that contributed most to 2008 exports

1. Refined petroleum products (+ 15.6 percent)
2. Food products, beverages and tobacco (+ 7.6 percent)
3. Products of agriculture, forestry and fishing (+ 4.4 percent)
4. Machinery and mechanical equipment (+ 1.5 percent)
5. Metals and metal products (+ 1.1 percent).

Regional origin of exports

1. For the refined petroleum products, the regions that had the greatest increases in direct sales abroad were Sardinia (+ 37.7 percent), Lombardy (+ 24 percent), Latium (+ 8.5 percent) and Sicily (+ 4.1 percent).
2. Export sales of food products, beverages and tobacco were particularly strong from Campania (+ 13.3 percent), Lombardy and Veneto (+ 9.5 percent for each), Piedmont (+ 9.1 percent) and Emilia Romagna (+ 8.7 percent).
3. For the products of agriculture, forestry and fishing, the most dynamic regions were Apulia (+ 14 percent), Sicily (+ 9.2 percent), Latium (+ 7.8 percent), Lombardy and Friuli-Venezia Giulia (+ 6.9 percent each).
4. For machinery and mechanical equipment, the regions with the greatest increases were Liguria (+ 23.5 percent), Piedmont (+ 4.3 percent), Lombardy (+ 4.2 percent) and Emilia Romagna (+ 3.2 percent).
5. For metals and metal products, the highest growth was registered by Friuli Venezia Giulia (+ 16 percent), Liguria (+ 12.3 percent) and Lombardy (+ 3 percent).

Declines in export sales in 2008

  •  Leather and leather products (- 5.4 percent)
  •  Products from non-metallic minerals (- 5.4 percent)
  •  Furniture (- 4.5 percent)
  •  Rubber and plastic products (- 4.1 percent).
The regions contributing most to the decrease in the first sector were Apulia, Campania, Veneto, Tuscany and the Marches; for products from non-metallic minerals, Latium, Tuscany, Veneto, Piedmont, Emilia Romagna and Lombardy; for furniture, Basilicata, Apulia, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Tuscany, Veneto and the Marches; and for rubber and plastic products Apulia, the Marches, Veneto, Abruzzo, Lombardy and Liguria.
