Aspen Institute: economic vitality and Lombardy’s excellences

Aspen Institute Italia carried out, in 2009, a research about the vitality of the Italian territory and an analysis of the National production excellences.

For the first research it was employed an economic indicator analyzing three dimensions:

  • demographic dimension (population in productive age)
  • occupational dimension (occupational levels)
  • production related dimension (value added per unit)

The economic indicator of the assessed structural dependence allows a purposeful representation of the growth potential of the different areas of the Country. Relatively low indicator values show a higher capacity of positive combinations between demographic, occupational and production levels.

Lombardy’s provinces show the highest levels of economic vitality. The province of Milan boasts the highest job production levels on a National scale.

The showcase of excellences

The second research aims to point out Italian primacies in the industrial sector. Excellences in Italian industry are assessed according to three factors:

  • innovation (number of patents and technological diversification)
  • image (number of references on foreign press, researches and results on major web search engines and PageRank of the company’s website)
  • internationalization (economic and functional relevance of foreign direct investments)

This research has taken into account manufacturing plants, with Italian and foreign capital, with a turnover exceeding 50 million Euros. The region with the highest number of excellences is Lombardy, followed by Veneto.
