Virtuous companies are concentrated in Lombardy
Most of the excellent Italian companies operate in Lombardy. This statement is confirmed by a recent survey by the Aspen Institute and by the 2008 selection of Confindustria Awards for Excellence.
The Aspen Institute took several factors into consideration in preparing the excellence rankings:
  •  consistency between strategy – company objectives in relation to the markets
  •  degree of internationalization
  •  innovation and value of patents
  •  quality of human resources
  •  value of trademarks.
Subject of the study: manufacturing companies with more than € 50 million in revenues. Among these, 100 companies were selected as the best performing in terms of growth and profitability in the period 2003–2005.

Many excellent companies belong to the fashion industry, then to machinery and metal-working. The chemical sector is also well represented. And the region that made the greatest contribution was Lombardy with 28 excellent companies.

This no. 1 position is also confirmed by the awards that Confindustria presents every year to companies that succeed best in enhancing the image of their areas and sustaining Italian production and innovation.

In the pre-selection, 404 companies were indicated. 36% have less than 50 employees, 37% between 50 and 250, and 27% over 250. 33% of the companies operate in machinery-metallurgy and 10% in textiles.
