Milan: capital of good taste
Milan is the economic capital of Italy. But its special characteristics go well beyond and include, among others, the thousand themes of taste.
I like to simplify the concept with a metaphor: Milan is the “New Yorkest” city in Europe.
Strolling down the streets of Milan, besides breathing a sensation of being in a
dynamic whirlwind of different peoples and languages
, it is interesting to note the multitude of restaurants that enrich and vitalize the city's streets.
The numbers speak for themselves: In Milan and province there are some 400 bars and restaurants for every 100,000 inhabitants. Considering that a million people live just in Milan, the values are certainly excellent.
I am not speaking simply of restaurants for all pocketbooks but
restaurants for all tastes
. Milan lets you tour the world at the table. And this has been true for over a century. The gastronomic Olympus resides here, and here you can breathe the opulence of Italy's production capital.
If you're looking for strict adherence to the
Milanese tradition,
rest assured that typical dishes like
risotto, cassouela, cotoletta, ossobuco and trippa
can be more easily found in the taverns of the hinterland. “Outside the gates" is still a ritual for the Milanese.
To be international and multi-ethnic, the Milan restaurant scene was the first in Italy, to distinguish itself for its broad,
versatile gastronomic offering.
Initially, it was "only" cuisine with Asian influences, but in recent years there has been a veritable boom in restaurants and places with truly different culinary traditions: it is increasingly common to find places specializing in Hungarian, Greek, Peruvian, Turkish, Algerian, Russian, etc.
Statistics help understand the phenomenon better: one Milanese in five eats international cuisine at least once a week. What's more, the Milanese hold
the Italian record for the frequency of restaurant dinners,
without overlooking the highly important moment of lunch.
At the regional level, the provinces of
Sondrio
and
Pavia
, for example, have shown a strong growth trend in recent years, due in part to the countless wine awards they receive.
